Chaenactis fremontii, Fremont Pincushion is a member of the Sunflower family. It is found in Creosote Bush and Joshua Tree woodland areas of the Mojave Desert below an elevation of 5,000 feet.
When fully grown, it is 4 to 12 inches tall. Absolutely gorgeous when in full bloom.
